Perun is the Slavic God of Thunder who teams up with Atticus O'Sullivan and others in the third book of The Iron Druid Chronicles, Hammered. The crew, which also includes Gunnar Magnusson, Leif Helgarson, Väinämöinen, and Zhang Guo Lao, teams up to go to Asgard and kill Thor.

Slavic MythologyEdit

In Slavic mythology, Perun is the highest god of the pantheon and the god of thunder and lightning. His other attributes were fire, mountains, the oak, iris, eagle, firmament (in Indo-European languages, this was joined with the notion of the sky of stone), horses and carts, weapons (the hammer, axe (Axe of Perun) and arrow) and war. He was first associated with weapons made of stone and later with those of metal.

Like Germanic Thor, Perun is described as a rugged man with a copper beard. He rides in a chariot pulled by a goat buck and carries a mighty axe, or sometimes a hammer. The axe is hurled at evil people and spirits and will always return to his hand.

In the booksEdit

Perun is portrayed as a red-headed man with a large beard and an excessive amount of body hair. He is a powerful god, able to call lightning down on command and control the winds to a degree that he can use it to fly himself and other people through the air to a specific destination. He speaks Russian as his main language, but can speak passable English with a heavy accent and some grammatical errors typical of Russian-speakers. His personality is friendly and jolly, and he seems to care very much about protecting Atticus and the other members of the group, giving them all fulgurite charms that make them immune to lightning. He explains that his vendetta against Thor is due to the Norse god's subversion of his pantheon, by encouraging practices among his believers that would not last and thus led to his worship dwindling. It is later revealed in Shattered that Perun was also present specifically to look after Atticus's well-being because of the prayers to him from Rebecca Dane.

After his plane is burned by Loki, Perun seeks asylum in Tír na nÓg, where he meets the Celtic goddess Flidais. The two take an immediate liking to one another an begin an ongoing relationship that is still going strong through Shattered.
